The Demolition of Tour des Coûts in Nièvre

The demolition of the 42-meter-high Tour des Coûts building was a significant moment for the residents of the neighborhood, as well as for former inhabitants and their loved ones who have cherished memories of the fourteen floors. The demolition required one of the largest excavators in France to bring down the structure. The tower, located in Sermoise, was once home to many families and held sentimental value for those who resided in its 80 apartments.

A Memorable Experience

Residents like Daniel, who lived on the top floor in apartment 80, recalled the lively atmosphere and the breathtaking view from their homes. A few years ago, they witnessed the spectacular display of fireworks in orange hues during the Festiv'été de Devaux. Daniel, along with their two sons and grandchildren, found solace in witnessing the tower's demolition.

"You know, this place meant a lot to me. We used to go here quite often, and then we'd go here and there. To see the Tour des Coûts fall was something that had to be witnessed. I had to come back," shared Daniel.

A Trip Down Memory Lane

Michael, Daniel's eldest son, who now resides in Lyon, also made sure not to miss bidding farewell to the tower that symbolized his youth. "Since we lived here, I learned that the tower was going to be demolished, so for me, it was only natural to come and see some memories or a part of our lives. Almost everyone who lived in this tower shared a bond," expressed Michael.

Daniel fondly remembered the friendly neighbors, particularly those who resided at the other end of the tower on the 84th floor. "There was one neighbor who used to play with my youngest son. We were very friendly, although we didn't go for coffee at each other's homes. But we would speak and catch up on the landing," shared Daniel.

Today, Daniel resides on the ground floor of a pavilion, a far cry from their former apartment in the tallest tower in Nièvre. Despite only having three photos as keepsakes from their eleven years in the tower (1994-2005), Daniel cherishes countless memories of their 14th-floor abode.

The Impact of the Demolition

The demolition of Tour des Coûts marks the end of an era for the residents of Sermoise. While some may feel a tinge of nostalgia, others are excited about what the future holds for the site and the neighborhood as a whole. The space once occupied by the tower may pave the way for new developments and opportunities for the local community.

With the tower now reduced to rubble, the stories and memories of its former residents will live on. The demolition of Tour des Coûts reminds us of the ever-changing nature of our cities, paving the way for progress and growth. It also serves as a testament to the significance of the places we call home, where we build relationships, create memories, and leave our mark.
