History of Évreux

Évreux has a long history dating back to Roman Gaul, where it was known as Mediolanum-Aulercorum. It became an episcopal see in the 4th century and later the seat of the county of Évreux in 989. Throughout the centuries, it belonged to the Duchy of Normandy, the Kingdom of England, and the Kingdom of France.

During the Hundred Years War, Évreux was the center of power for the Évreux-Navarre branch, which reigned over the kingdom of Navarre. The city was occupied by the English from 1418 to 1441. It suffered significant damage during World War II but has been rebuilt, retaining its distinctive architectural style.
