Exploring Penta-di-Casinca: Unveiling the Charms of Corsica's Hidden Village
San Pellegrino is a destination of interest due to the recent flooding that has affected the area. The authorities have been conducting inspections in one of the residential areas that were affected by the floods. The houses have been filled with mud, and the firefighters and civil security personnel are working to remove the traces of mud. The water reached a height of more than 40 cm, and residents like Yvette Bastian, who is 87 years old, are returning to their homes for the first time since the flood.
The residents in the affected area have experienced multiple floods in the past. Yvette Bastian claims that this is the seventh time she has experienced such a high level of flooding in her home, reaching up to 1.10 meters. The local authorities have been repeatedly approached by concerned residents after the floods that occurred in 2015. Some areas in the town center cannot be inhabited anymore due to the repeated flooding, and insurance companies will compensate the affected residents. However, in the vicinity of the mouth of the river and the sea, 26 houses are condemned and will be demolished.
The indemnity amounts offered by the insurance companies are considered too low, and negotiations are currently underway. The government is involved in buying the properties that will be demolished. This process can be complicated, but the Direction of Territories and the Sea, along with public finance institutions, are working on it. This is just the first step in the process.
Discovering Ajaccio: Exploring the Birthplace of Napoleon Bonaparte in CorsicaOutside of the redevelopment zone, the property owners have the option to create what is called a "refuge zone" if they wish to do so. Despite the classification of the entire area as a flood zone, some residents still value their homes. One resident, who recently moved into the area with his wife and child, claims that he was not informed about the real dangers of flooding when he purchased the house a month ago. He intends to file a complaint for deception and demands the cancellation of the sale.
The resident expresses his frustration, stating that he would have never bought the house if he had been aware of the possibility of 2-meter high waves. He questions how the government could sell these houses, knowing the risk of flooding. The parcels of land located behind the residential area are even named "Avions-Marre," meaning "sick of floods," indicating that the entire area is a natural overflow of the Fus Malte river.
San Pellegrino serves as a reminder of the dangers of living in flood-prone areas, and the importance of governments and insurance companies providing appropriate support and compensation to affected residents. The negotiations between the authorities, insurance companies, and property owners are ongoing, with the hope of finding a resolution that satisfies everyone involved.
