On January 13th, 1129, a council was convened in the city of Trois to recognize the Order of the Temple, a proposal presented by Hugo de Payens and supported by Bernard of Clairvaux. The order was established based on the principles of simplicity, poverty, chastity, and prayer. The Templars, as they came to be known, became a militia dedicated to protecting pilgrims traveling to the Holy Land.
