Discovering the Charming Town of Île-Rousse in Balagne

Charlotte believes that the best discoveries happen just around the corner. With a passion for exploring her beautiful country alongside extraordinary and often unusual people, Charlotte takes us on another adventure. Today, she wants to introduce us to the charming town of Île-Rousse in Balagne.

As we take in the view from above, the town is instantly recognizable with its two islands attached to the old town. Charlotte has arranged a meeting with Stéphane Pergola, a local who grew up in Île-Rousse and recently wrote a book tracing the history of the town and its inhabitants.

The first thing that catches the eye is the reddish color of the town, for which it is named. This unique color is due to the porphyry granite found in the two islands visible from the town. The first island is called Salette and the second is La Pietra, home to the iconic Genoese tower.

The Genoese towers hold great significance for the town and its history. During the 16th century, Genoa decided to fortify the Corsican coastline with these towers, and Île-Rousse was no exception. In fact, it is one of the first and most well-preserved examples of these towers in Corsica.

Stéphane shares his childhood memories of growing up in Île-Rousse, with his grandfather being a fisherman. He recalls fond memories of picnicking on the beach with his cousins, taking a boat ride with his grandfather, and experiencing the beauty of the sea.

The history of Île-Rousse is intertwined with the figure of Pascal Paoli, known as the 1st General of the Corsican nation. In the 18th century, Paoli led the fight against the Genoese, who oppressed the Corsican people. Although Paoli's dream of an independent Corsica was not fully realized, he is now hailed as the father of the Corsican nation, particularly in the resurgence of Corsican cultural identity in the 20th century.

Walking through the narrow streets of the old town, we come across the Place du Canon, named after the cannon that marked the entrance to the town. Stéphane points out the Rue de Nuit, a narrow street that receives only 15 minutes of sunlight, and reminisces about his childhood home and the memories associated with it.

We continue our journey to the market hall, where Stéphane's grandmother used to sell fish. The market hall was transformed in the mid-19th century to accommodate the growing trade in the town. Stéphane also shares his excitement about his book, which is a visual journey through the history of Île-Rousse using old postcards, photographs, and archival materials.

We take a break to listen to a musical performance in the church of the Mise et Luin, performed by a local group called Fia di Montizzi. The music reflects their love for their land and encompasses both traditional and modern elements, with a strong Corsican influence.

Charlotte and the group enjoy the performance, highlighting the pleasure that comes from making music and perpetuating a tradition. The group, while remaining amateur, has been together for almost 25 years and embraces the essence of tradition while adding their own unique touches.

Charlotte leaves us with a last glimpse of the beautiful voices of Fia di Montizzi before bidding us farewell. The town of Île-Rousse and its rich history and cultural heritage continue to captivate and inspire visitors.
